More Information on Certificate iii Aged Care
Australians are living longer, and the need for aged care services is becoming more pressing. The Australian Bureau of Statistics estimates that by 2050, the proportion of the Australian population aged 65 years and over will rise to between 23 and 25 per cent. This will place heavy demands on the aged and community care sector.
In a report by the Australian Government Productivity Commission called Trends in Aged Care Services, over 40 per cent of the workforce in residential aged care in 2003 were personal carers. In 2010, Access Economics reported that significant investment in developing a skilled workforce to deliver aged care was required. To this end, in February 2012, the Australian Government announced it would provide $558 million over four years to support training and workforce development in the aged care sector.
A Certificate III in Aged Care provides a rewarding career in the community services sector, with the added guarantee of continued employment. The qualification is suited for people who wish to work in aged care facilities with the elderly and for those who wish to formalise their current community work skills. The certificate qualifies you as a community care worker, home care assistant, personal carer, community support worker, personal care assistant in an aged care facility, in-home respite worker, and an assistant in nursing. There is certainly no shortage of work over the next 20 years. The Certificate also provides a pathway to other qualifications, such as a Diploma of Nursing and university degree courses.
The aged and community care sector is experiencing major labour shortages. Job opportunities for graduates with a Certificate III in Aged Care can be found in two types of residential care in Australia: high-level and low-level care. High-level care provides nursing care, meals, laundry, cleaning and personal care. Low-level care provides assistance with meals, laundry and personal care.
The course is Australian government-accredited and nationally recognised. It can be undertaken in a number of teaching institutions, including TAFE. It is usually delivered online, which means it can be studied at home. Assessment is via assignments and work placement. TAFE’s course is self-paced and requires 10 hours of study a week to complete the course in a year. However, most people complete it in two years.
There are super fast courses available, which can be completed in as little as five weeks, but selecting the right training organisation is important. Not all employers will provide employment on the basis of a piece of paper.
There are no entry requirements, but desirable personal attributes include physical stamina, good literacy and numeracy, commitment to learning, and a positive attitude towards the elderly. You also need police clearance to work in the community services industry.
The course teaches you to communicate with clients, provide physical and psychosocial support, treat people living with dementia, comply with aged and community care requirements, and apply first aid. Elective units include working within a legal and ethical framework, facilitating cooperative behaviour, working with culturally diverse clients and co-workers, and advocating for clients.
